Once produced, ammonia can be applied directly to soil as anhydrous ammonia or converted into other nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, and urea. Aqua ammonia, a diluted form dissolved in water, is also used in irrigation systems for easier handling.
Anhydrous ammonia is injected into the soil where it reacts with water to form ammonium (NH4⁺), which binds to soil particles and becomes available to plants.
